Why Sitting too long is bad for your health

You go running three times a week and lift some weights at the gym. So it doesn’t matter you spend 8 hours a day sitting at a desk in work right? Wrong!

Even if you do exercise – spending lots of time sitting raises your risk of many health issues.

Muscular pain

The human body is not designed to sit for long periods of time. When you spend a lot of time seated the muscles get less oxygen and nutrients from the blood.

Spending too long in any one position can cause some muscles to become overused which can lead to pain and muscular imbalance. For example many desk workers slump over their desks leading to hunched up shoulders and neck pain or even the aptly named text neck syndrome

To help reduce your risk the advice is to take regular micro breaks throughout the day.

  • Every 30 mins or so stand up and do a few stretches or a couple of squats
  • Go for a 30 minute walk on your lunch break
  • Rather than send an email walk to your colleague’s desk to speak to them in person
  • When talking on the phone stand up
  • Will your office let you have a standing desk?
