Some people are nervous about massage or have concerns that they may not be able to have massage due to a medical problem.
Over the next few weeks I am going to write a few blogs about some of the more common questions and this week I am starting with your skin!
I want to reassure you that nearly everyone can have some form of massage treatment. Even if you have a medical issue we can probably adapt the treatment to be safe for you.
If you still aren’t sure after reading this send me a quick message and I will do my best to help.
Please know I don’t care if you are over or underweight (my couch can hold up to 25 stone if you are wondering). I don’t mind if you have cellulite, hairy legs/armpits or backs! Your gender and sexuality don’t matter. I promise I will do my best to make you feel comfortable.
There are some skin conditions that can be infectious so to avoid spreading infection you would not be able to have a massage over the affected area until the infection cleared up. This applies to things like:
- Athletes foot
For example if you have a verucca on your foot you would not be able to have reflexology until it was healed, however a back massage would be fine.
Broken or damaged skin
Due to the risk of infection (not to mention it would hurt!) you could not have massage over any areas of damaged skin – for example cuts/wounds/burns.
You can have a massage if you have mild/moderate acne. If you have very inflamed spots massage would be painful so I would work around these areas. Having aromatherapy with oils like tea tree, lavender, bergamot or eucalyptus can even help calm acne down!
Mild eczema and psoriasis are helped as the oil moisturises the skin and the massage boosts blood and lymph flow. In severe cases where skin is broken we would not be able to massage directly over those areas.
I use almond or grapeseed oil which are very unlikely to cause a skin reaction. If you are worried you are most welcome to bring your own products.
