What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a therapy which uses reflexes usually (but not always) on the feet to stimulate healing and the free flow of energy through the body.  The diagram below shows the location of the main reflexes on the feet.

How can I use Reflexology to help with stress?

You can easily carry out a short treatment on yourself to destress.

Sit in a comfortable chair and put on some relaxing music.  Bring one foot up and cross over the other leg and apply a small amount of oil or cream and massage over the whole foot using a fairly firm pressure for a few minutes.  This helps warm up the foot and increase the circulation.  Using the diagram above find the following points and apply fairly firm pressure to them for about 30 seconds each.

  • Solar Plexus
  • Neck
  • Adrenals
  • Head/Brain

Using your thumb in a shuffling movement massage over the diaphragm area and then finish by holding the solar plexus reflex again for a few moments before repeating on the other foot.

You can do this as often as you like to help relax – it’s an excellent routine to carry out before bedtime.  If you have specific areas where you tend to suffer with stress feel free to add these into the routine above.  For example if you tend to get bloating or digestive upset when stressed add in the stomach and intestine areas.
