Magnesium and your muscles

Magnesium is a mineral essential for our body to function properly.

It’s essential for over 300 different functions. Some of the things it contributes to are:

  • muscle contraction
  • strong healthy bones and preventing osteoporosis in later life
  • helps symptoms of PMS
  • a healthy heart

Unfortunately many people are deficient and it’s estimated that up to 70% of adults and 53% of teenage girls have low levels.

Magnesium Deficiency

Signs of Deficiency can include:

  • Headaches
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Poor sleep
  • Muscle cramps at night

How do we obtain magnesium?

Magnesium rich foods include green leafy vegetables such as kale and spinach, nuts and seeds and whole wheat.

Kale contains magnesium

Another way of obtaining magnesium is transdermally (through the skin) by applying products containing magnesium to the skin and massaging them in.

The magnesium is first absorbed through the epidermis (outer layer of skin) then into the blood vessels and muscles underneath. This is a faster way to take on magnesium than through diet.

In fact a study published in the Nutrition practioner showed that after 12 weeks of transdermal application the levels of magnesium in cells had risen by almost 60%. Taking dietary supplements would take up to 2 years to achieve the same effect.

What can Transdermal Magnesium help with?

DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) is the soreness you feel after a heavy workout or extra long walk. It’s caused by damage to muscles which leaves tiny tears. This sounds bad thing but it’s actually an essential part of muscles gaining strength as the muscles grow by repairing these tears.

A transdermal magnesium product can help to ease the pain by regulating muscle contractions and helping the muscle to relax. It also helps to replace magnesium lost through sweat.

The Mayo clinic found that women who used a transdermal spray daily reported a reduction in symptoms of fibromyalgia. In particular it helped reduce tender spots, depression and fatigue.

Where can I get it?

Better You have a great range of transdermal magnesium products

They sent me some products to try which I used on clients and myself. They were easy to use, quickly absorbed and have no nasty chemicals. They are also cruelty free and made in England. You can buy them here (I will receive a small commission on any products ordered).
